Effective October 1, Janet Miller of Miland Services is Executive Director of AHMA East Texas.9/21/2022
Janet has been in the affordable industry since 1979 and has been a member of AHMA East Texas since the 1980s. She attended University of Houston majoring in Training and Development. She has owned and managed both Tax Credit and Project-Based Section 8 properties. She has served on the AHMA board since 2020. Janet started providing voucher processing services, now known as Miland Services, in 1988 when HUD started encouraging owners and managing agents to automate the calculation of subsidy payments and monthly billings for project-based housing payments. Janet brings a tremendous amount of affordable knowledge and experience to her new position. Effective October 1, Michael Alexander and Dean Newton of Non-Profit Services Corp. are retiring as the management team for AHMA East Texas and the Scholarship Foundation. Dean Newton took over management of AHMA East Texas in 1984 when it was known as the Association of HUD Management Agents, serving as Executive Director. Dean was instrumental in the development of NAHMA’s certification programs for the Certified Professional of Occupancy (CPO) and the National Affordable Housing Professional (NAHP) while serving on NAHMA’s Education and Certification committees. He also assisted in establishing the AHMA East Texas Occupancy Training education series. In 2007 he brought Michael Alexander on board to take over the duties of Executive Director while Dean stepped back to handle back-office administration, website management, and finance. Michael Alexander has served in the housing industry since 1980, beginning on the conventional side until 1994. In 1994, he began his career in affordable housing and immediately became a member of AHMA East Texas. Michael served on the board of directors during that time and as President for two years. Fifteen years ago, Dean Newton asked Michael to join with him as the new Executive Director. Michael has had the privilege of serving AHMA these past years, organizing education programs, and serving as the AHMA Rep for NAHMA for the past five years. He worked with NAHMA on the Education Committee and as a Nationally Certified Trainer. As a former property manager, Michael has a unique perspective on the needs of our front-line managers and was able to share that experience with other directors. AHMA East Texas is nationally known for training front-line staff. Thanks for your service, Terry Newton as you also enter retirement. Terry has served as bookkeeper and Dean's assistant for many years. Michael and Dean are especially proud of AHMA’s establishment of the AHMA East Texas Scholarship Foundation. Ours is the only program nationally that provides scholarships to residents and employees and their immediate families. Over a period of 19 years, we have awarded 252 scholarships totaling $563,450.00.
Michael and Dean both thank the Board and all our AHMA members for your tireless work to have exemplary properties and the attention you give to your residents. You make a difference in this world. As Michael and Dean move toward retirement, they both welcome Janet Miller as the new Executive Director and predict great things for AHMA going forward. |
